People with developmental disabilities live on their own or on their own with support provided by Ongwanada and other agencies. When more support is required, Ongwanada offers a number of community residential options. Placements are flexible and are reviewed regularly.
Eligibility: Individuals with developmental disabilities.
Area served: Frontenac, Lennox & Addington, Leeds & Grenville Counties.
Referrals: Accepted from all sources.
Waiting period: Variable. A waiting list is maintained and reviewed annually.
Fees: Individuals receiving a government pension are charged a co-payment fee which contributes to the cost of their residential and support services.
Ongwanada operates over 20 community residences located in neighbourhoods in Kingston, Napanee, Gananoque as well as other outlaying rural areas. Generally three to six people each live in these family-like settings.
Varying levels of staff support are provided at each home and most are wheelchair accessible and all have access to a van that allows clients to be more active in their communities.
Three of the community residences in Kingston (Inverness Crescent, Elizabeth Avenue, and Barclay Road) offer 24 hour nursing support to clients with chronic medical conditions. Three visiting nurse positions provide nursing support to ensure quality healthcare for those clients living in Ongwanada's non-nursing community residences.
Home Share offers families or individuals the opportunity to share their home with a child or adult who has a developmental disability. The program fosters rewarding and long lasting relationships that enrich the lives of all participants. Placements are made gradually and with care to ensure compatibility. The host family, called the Home Share Provider, receives financial remuneration, regular respite, and ongoing support from Ongwanada community counsellors. More Home Share Providers are needed. Families and individuals interested in learning more about this opportunity are asked to call Geoff Gifford at 548-4417 Ext. 1178.
Residential Respite Care
Respite care is offered on weekends at a home on Wilson Street in Kingston to provide parents and other caregivers with occasional relief from their responsibilities. Respite is available in some Ongwanada homes throughout the week and may be available with host families through the Home Share program.
Waiting period: Approximately two months for respite in a community residence and/or availability of a suitable placement. The waiting period for Home Share respite depends on the availability of host families.
Fees: $3 a day for children and $15 a day for adults (subject to change) for respite in an Ongwanada community residence. The fee for Home Share respite ranges from $24 to $31 a day depending on the level of support required.
