Videoconferencing

As the co-lead agency for the Eastern Region Community Network of Specialized Care, Ongwanada oversees the Network's videoconferencing initiative.

Videoconferencing is one of the tools given to the Networks by the Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS) to improve access for individuals in rural and remote communities to clinical services, training and administrative events.

Ongwanada hosts one of 18 available MCSS videoconferencing sites in Eastern Ontario. Province-wide, 74 Community Network of Specialized Care sites are connected through the Ontario Telemedicine Network.

Videoconferencing is an interactive tool that combines the use of video, computing and communications technologies to allow people in different locations to meet face-to-face to conduct a conference in real time.

The Networks utilize videoconferencing for the following purposes:
- Assessments and feedback of diagnosis
- Consultation to individuals, families and those they support
- Treatment to specialized populations
- Consultation among specialists and other professionals on challenging cases
- Linking staff and professionals when inclement weather precludes travel
- Training and education
- Administrative (meetings)
