Home Share

Home Share offers families or individuals the opportunity to share their home with a child or an adult who has a developmental disability. The program fosters rewarding and long lasting relationships that enrich the lives of all participants. Placements are made gradually and with care to ensure compatibility. The host family, called the Home Share Provider, receives financial remuneration, regular respite and ongoing support from Ongwanada community counsellors.

How do I become a Provider?

Potential Home Share Providers are carefully screened before being accepted into the program. This involves a health check, criminal reference check, a home assessment, letters of reference and an in-depth interview with Ongwanada staff.

Ongwanada will undertake a family profile to better understand you and to find an appropriate match. Ongwanada staff will try to match you with someone with similar interests and lifestyle.

Your family will then be introduced to the person at a convenient time. If both parties are interested in pursuing a relationship, more visits will be arranged. The person will move into your home as soon as everyone is comfortable.

What are the benefits?

Home Share Providers receive financial remuneration determined by the level of support needed by the person sharing your home. Providers also receive: Twenty-one days of paid time off a year, orientation and training, ongoing assistance from a counsellor, twenty-four hour a day on-call support, as well as access to various professionals at Ongwanada such as a dietician, physiotherapist, pharmacist and psychologist.
