Cytogenetics and DNA Research Laboratory

The research team at Ongwanada Resource Centre collaborates
internationally in the study of genetic disorders associated with
developmental disabilities with a special interest in autism, Fragile X
syndrome and other X-linked disorders, Down's syndrome, manic
depression, learning disabilities, and psychiatric genetic disorders.
The laboratory does research searching for genes for Autism Spectrum
Disorders and X-linked forms of developmental disability. To

The results of research projects are published in scientific journals
and presented at conferences.

Education
Ongwanada is a teaching site for students from high schools, colleges, and universities in Southeastern Ontario and provides educational opportunities for employees, families, and volunteers. Professional expertise is shared through partnerships with agencies and organizations in Ontario and New York State, and internationally through the 1World Foundation.

Epidemiology
Hélène Ouellette-Kuntz, epidemiologist
Jointly appointed by Queen's University and Ongwanada, the epidemiologist is engaged in teaching, research, consultative services, and the supervision of graduate students in the field of developmental disabilities. Regular surveys of Ongwanada families, clients, and Home Share providers are conducted to evaluate services and to recommend improvements. Also under study are trends behind incidents of injury and abuse, quality of life issues, and the prevalence of developmental disability in the population of eastern Ontario. Epidemiology in collaboration with Queen's University has also produced a video entitled AFire Proof@ to educate people with developmental disabilities about fire safety. The video features Ongwanada clients and can be purchased for $74.99. Reduced rates for multiple orders.

Psychological Services
The psychology department is a resource for Ongwanada staff in responding to clients with emotional, psychiatric, behavioural, or learning problems that interfere with quality of life. The department assesses the individual and contributes to the development of a behavioural support plan. Assessments may include cognitive functioning, long term planning, behaviour, attitudes, potential skill development, interests and other personality attributes, psychopathology, environmental factors, and relationships. While the department's role is primarily consultative, counselling is provided to clients both individually and in small groups.
Eligibility: Open to clients of Ongwanada.
