DATE: March 17, 2020

I’m certain during this continually evolving situation with the COVID-19 virus, that you have many questions and concerns with regards to Ongwanada’s actions to ensure the health and safety of your loved ones. I can assure you that Ongwanada is taking a proactive approach to pandemic planning and is taking a number of steps to protect the people we support and our staff. This includes a number of exceptional measures aimed at reducing the spread of the virus to Ongwanada facilities. The following measures will be reviewed on April 6, but will otherwise remain in effect until further notice.

Residential Services
Ongwanada will be following the Ministry of Health’s mandated procedures for care homes and will no longer be permitting visitors to the residential/treatment/complex homes. We realize the impact that this will have on families, but we are taking this precautionary step in order to limit the chances of the COVID-19 virus being spread to our  residents and staff. We appreciate the importance of staying in touch with your family member and will coordinate with families to continue communication through other means such as telephone and Facetime calls.

Should you wish to take your family member home during this health crisis, we will reserve their space, however we will not be able to accommodate their return until after the health crisis is over to prevent against possible transmission of the virus.

Individuals supported in Community Residences/treatment/complex homes will not be attending Day Programs or community activities in general until further notice.

Ongwanada Resource Centre
Effective Monday, March 16, 2020, the Ongwanada Resource Centre is closed to the public. Public services including XRay, hydrotherapy pool, Snoezelen Room are closed. Food service is available to staff only. After-hour use of the Resource Centre by community groups is suspended.

Day Programs
Balsam Day Program is closed effective Monday March 16, 2020 until further notice. Crescent Day Program will close over the course of the week of March 16 2020 until further notice.
