POSITION:
To assist in the implementation of physiotherapy and occupational therapy programs designed to improve the independence and quality of life of Ongwanada persons served and individuals from the community who have intellectual disabilities, e.g., motor skills. To schedule clients and community individuals/groups to access the hydrotherapy pool, as well as completing some of the administrative and maintenance responsibilities for the hydrotherapy pool, e.g., testing chemical levels.

DUTIES:

• Assisting persons served with activities of daily living, i.e. ambulation, dressing and support in toileting;
• Carrying out individual therapeutic exercises as recommended by the Physiotherapist/ Occupational Therapist;
• Acting as a “dry deck person” on deck when designated;
• Utilizing accessible equipment, i.e., lifts, ceiling track, change table to transfer safely;
• Following hydrotherapy policies and procedures and health and safety standards for all persons served, community groups, individuals and staff;
• Assisting Ongwanada and community participants to access the hydrotherapy pool and change area;
• Implementing Behaviour Support Plans as required;
• Reporting maintenance concerns to the maintenance department/supervisor;
• Vacuuming of the pool as required;
• Submitting attendance forms to Finance Department for billing on a monthly basis;
• Orienting new participants/staff to the pool area;
• Receiving completed Pool Application and Release of Responsibility forms from new pool participants;
• Reviewing clients’ physical status prior to entering the pool, i.e., open wounds, loose bowel movements, etc.
• Maintaining a clean and safe work area;
• Obtaining chemical readings of the pool water every two hours;
• Attending departmental meetings on a monthly basis;
• Notifying Housekeeping Supervisor for weekly supply of towels, diapers, wash cloths;
• Notifying pool participants of pool closures, change in hours, etc.;
• Advising Supervisor when equipment or supplies are required, i.e., laundry soap, shampoos, stationary, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

• Minimum requirement is successful completion of a Personal Support Worker Program or High School Diploma plus direct experience and knowledge working with individuals with a developmental disability;
• Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills are required in dealing with participants, students, families, staff and the community at large;
• Ability to work as a team member is required;
• Incumbent must have current CPR/First Aid certificates and complete re-certification as per Ongwanada standards;
• Must successfully complete and maintain Non-Violent Crisis Interventions Training as per Ongwanada policies;
• Incumbent is required to attend and complete a Water Safety course;
• General health must allow individual to carry out the requirements of the Physical Demands Analysis of the job without risk to health.;
• General health must allow individual to spend 3 – 4 hours per day in a therapeutic pool (warm, humid environment).
