POSITION:

To support and advise the Manager-Human Resources and line managers in the full range of employee relations and Human Resources activities with foundational knowledge of policies and practices, compliance requirements, and risk implications of HR decisions in both union and non-union work environments, including: employee relations, collective bargaining agreements, performance management, discrimination and harassment, recruiting and hiring, compensation and benefits, leaves and disability management, records management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Incumbents may be assigned to work in one or more of the following areas:

  1. Employee Relations/Labour Relations: 60%
  • Advise on Employee Relations and labour relations matters for union and non-union staff;
  • Work closely with the Manager, HR providing support with all employee matters, including assisting in grievance and arbitration processes, performance, attendance and disciplinary matters;
  1. Generalist Duties to backup Specialists: 25%
  • Support with the hiring process for union and non-union staff, including internal and external advertising, applicant screening, interviewing, reference checks and data management
  • Meet with and complete required documentation for new hires and terminations
  1. Occupational Health and Safety and Training: 10%
  • Coordinate manager and supervisor training related to development of leadership roles in a unionized environment
  • Support with H & S Committee meetings including research and data analysis;
  1. Committee/Task Force Involvement: 5%
  • Recording Secretary for OPSEU Employee Relations Committee and labour negotiations/pay equity meetings, as required;
  • Involvement in various committees/task forces, as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Human Resources Management degree/diploma from a recognized College or University or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Minimum two years’ experience in human resources in a unionized workplace is preferred;
  • High level of data analysis skills with keen attention to detail;
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks, set goals and meet deadlines;
  • Proficiency with standard business software applications;
  • Bilingualism (French/English) an asset.
